What Happened?

On December 8, 2025, Phoenix Art Museum identified unauthorized access to certain systems within its computer network. An investigation was launched, and the museum later determined that unauthorized access to files actually occurred earlier, on December 3, 2025. The museum continued its investigation and reviewed the files that were accessed; on March 20, 2026, it determined that one or more accessed files contained personal information belonging to certain individuals. The breach was disclosed to state regulators, including the Maine Attorney General and the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, on April 15, 2026. Phoenix Art Museum began notifying affected individuals on April 15, 2026, via written letters sent by first-class mail. Public reporting also indicates that on February 12, 2026, a ransomware group known as Rhysida claimed responsibility for the attack on the Tor network and stated it had obtained the museum’s data and intended to publish the stolen information within six to seven days. The total number of people affected is reported as 1,758.
